Over $15 billion has been stolen across 226 crypto hack incidents between 2012 and May 2026 in the UEEx tracked dataset, with Chainalysis estimating wider ecosystem losses above $20 billion over the same period. Key Highlights
Total Value Lost
Over $15 billion stolen across 226 tracked incidents from 2012 through May 2026. Chainalysis recorded $3.4 billion stolen in 2025 alone, a record year, and PeckShield tracked more than $750 million in losses across the first four months of 2026.
Largest Single Breach
The February 2025 Bybit hack: roughly $1.5 billion, attributed to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. The FBI’s IC3 and Chainalysis both rank it the largest single theft in crypto history, accounting for about 44% of all funds stolen during 2025.
Most Common Causes
Private key compromises, bridge verification failures, and smart contract bugs dominate the dataset. Chainalysis attributed 43.8% of 2024’s stolen value to private key theft, and KelpDAO’s $292M April 2026 loss came from a single misconfigured cross-chain verifier.
Top Targets
Cross-chain bridges, centralized exchanges, and DeFi lending protocols sit at the top of the target list. Bridges alone accounted for about $329 million across eight incidents in 2026 through mid-May per PeckShield, with Ronin, Wormhole, BNB Token Hub, and KelpDAO all suffering nine-figure drains in recent years.
Most Attacked Networks
Ethereum, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, and Solana lead by both incident count and dollar value. Ethereum-based protocols absorb the largest dollar losses thanks to higher TVL, while Solana’s share has jumped sharply on the back of Drift, Step Finance, SwissBorg, and the November 2025 Upbit hot-wallet drain.

The shape of crypto theft has changed three times since 2012. The Mt. Gox era through 2017 was driven by a small number of exchange failures. The 2018–2022 wave saw losses cross $1 billion every year, fuelled by smart contract bugs and bridge exploits. The current wave is different: Bybit’s $1.5B hack defined 2025, and 2026 opened with KelpDAO’s $292M and Drift’s $285M back-to-back in April, attacks built on cloud key compromises, RPC poisoning, and months-long social engineering rather than on-chain code bugs.

Most attacked networks by frequency on exchanges
Ethereum remains the most-attacked network in the dataset, accounting for roughly one in three incidents. Bitcoin sits second, driven largely by exchange and hot-wallet breaches from the Mt. Gox era through Upbit’s November 2025 Solana hot-wallet drain. BNB Chain and Solana have both climbed in 2025–2026, Solana on the back of Drift, Step Finance, SwissBorg’s $41M staking-API exploit, and the Upbit Solana-asset breach. Newer chains like Sui, Sonic, Stacks, and Stellar appear in the long tail, a signal that attackers follow liquidity wherever it concentrates.
