The Republican National Committee (RNC) in the United States is about to set a global precedent after making a significant policy shift that incorporates support for crypto and Bitcoin (BTC) mining into their official party platform. This move comes as part of the party’s strategy to “champion innovation” within the U.S. economy.
Republicans Champion Innovation with Pro-Crypto Stance
Moments ago, an update was posted to Donald Trump’s campaign website, where the RNC announced that they would be adding crypto advocacy in their draft platform. The update accuses the Democratic Party of perpetrating an “unlawful” crackdown on crypto, pledging to “oppose the creation of a Central Bank Digital Currency” (CBDC). A statement on the updated platform reads:
“We will defend the right to mine Bitcoin, and ensure every American has the right to self-custody their digital assets, and transact free from government surveillance and control.”
Meanwhile, it might be worth noting that this shift in policy comes just before the RNC’s big event. For clarity, the party’s national convention starts on July 15, with many expecting Trump to secure the official nomination for the U.S. presidency at the same event.
Interestingly, these unfolding events follow Trump’s recent conviction on 34 felony counts in New York. However, a Supreme Court has also considered presidential immunity to postpone the hearing to September.
Political Environment Heats Up
The timing of the RNC’s announcement comes at a politically charged moment. On June 27, President Joe Biden faced off against Trump in a CNN debate. However, the debate, which did not address digital assets, exposed Biden as struggling with his performance. Unfortunately, this has led certain enthusiasts and other keen observers to begin questioning his candidacy. Despite that, though, Biden has reaffirmed his intention to seek the Democratic nomination.
The Democratic National Committee is expected to decide on their official nominee. That is, before the August 7 deadline to appear on the Ohio ballot. Their convention is also slated for August 19. This leaves the political landscape highly dynamic as both parties prepare for the November 5 Election Day.
