Incident Review

In July 2017, BitMarket, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, fell victim to a shadowy breach that laid bare the perils lurking within the crypto world’s inner sanctums. The hack, pinned on director Marcin Aszkielowicz, saw 600 BTC vanish, a theft confirmed by Aszkielowicz in a statement reported by Finance Magnates. While the exact mechanics remain cloaked, it is unclear whether Aszkielowicz exploited privileged access or system flaws.

Operating in Poland’s second-largest crypto hub, BitMarket shuttered abruptly in July 2019, its website flashing a cryptic note about “loss of liquidity,” a likely scar from the 2017 heist, per CoinDesk. Users, blindsided, faced unfulfilled withdrawals and unanswered questions, with Reddit user OdoBanks noting prior red flags like forced password changes and halted transactions.

The breach, unfolding in 2017’s sparse regulatory landscape, left customers uncompensated, eroding trust in BitMarket and casting a pall over exchange security. No law enforcement outcomes surfaced, though Aszkielowicz faced charges by 2019 for misleading users, per Finance Magnates. The saga, stark in its opacity, ignited calls for ironclad internal controls, rigorous employee vetting, and transparent operations to shield the crypto ecosystem from those entrusted to protect it.
