Specific contributions in sequence: Phil Zimmermann created PGP in 1991, giving individuals military-grade encryption for the first time.

3. Encryption as Surveillance Countermeasure 

As mass surveillance programs were revealed in scope and severity, cypherpunks redoubled their advocacy for encryption as the most effective means to counter dragnet collection of private communications and reclaim digital privacy.

Projects like the Tor anonymity network and off-the-record messaging directly confront state snooping. 

Cypherpunks also scrutinize policy proposals that could undermine encryption, strengthening legal and ethical arguments for its importance.

In 2026, the Cypherpunks Are Winning and Losing at the Same Time

Edward Snowden’s 2013 revelations did what no cypherpunk manifesto could: they proved to a mass audience that everything the movement had warned about in 1993 was not paranoia, it was a documented reality.

The NSA had built the surveillance infrastructure the cypherpunks had predicted. The response wasn’t widespread outrage. It was mainstream adoption of encrypted messaging.

Signal, WhatsApp end-to-end encryption, and app-level HTTPS all accelerated after Snowden.

The cypherpunks had built the tools. The world finally started using them.

But the 2025-2026 landscape is more complicated. Bitcoin, the cypherpunks’ greatest achievement is now held by BlackRock and Fidelity.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs hold over $100 billion in assets controlled by the same institutional intermediaries cypherpunks designed Bitcoin to route around.

Tornado Cash, a privacy tool built entirely on cypherpunk principles, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in 2022 and its developers prosecuted in 2024-2025. In 2025, 73 exchanges globally delisted privacy coins, a 43% increase from 2023.

Cypherpunk Ideology and Philosophy in Crypto

The cypherpunk movement stands for individual sovereignty, autonomy, and privacy as fundamental rights and skepticism of centralized authority and control – whether governmental, corporate, or otherwise.

Cypherpunks see privacy as crucial for political dissent, innovation, and basic civil liberties.

Overall, crypto’s political implications remain hotly debated within the movement.

Libertarianism’s non-aggression principle and emphasis on individual choice clearly influence cypherpunk thought.

Cryptocurrencies that bypass traditional financial and governmental intermediaries to empower self-determination through private, voluntary interactions exemplify libertarian ideals.

However, some argue that complete individualism risks socially destructive outcomes that require alternative models.

Critiques and Internal Debates

Cypherpunk ideology is not monolithic, and figures openly critique one another to strengthen philosophical rigour.

Debates scrutinize whether certain cypherpunk stances could enable harm or neglect societal duties. 

Some propose balancing civil liberties with mechanisms ensuring security, accountability, and equitable access.

Overall, ideological diversity and scepticism of dogma remain hallmarks of the fluid, questioning cypherpunk spirit.

Conclusion

The mathematicians nobody listened to in 1993 turned out to be right about everything. The surveillance state arrived on schedule.

The centralized control of money they warned about is now called a CBDC and it’s being piloted in 130 countries.

The tools they built in response — encryption, anonymity networks, Bitcoin are used by billions of people who have never heard of Eric Hughes or Timothy May.

That might be the cypherpunk movement’s most uncommon achievement: building infrastructure so successful that the world adopted it without understanding where it came from.

The argument they made, that privacy is not a preference but a precondition for everything else is still being argued.
