The team behind the meme coin Normie faces a huge backlash following a disturbing promotional video for its token. Although the video is now deleted, it showed the Normie mascot character taking its own life before encountering a deity, giving it a “rebirth.”
Normie Coin Suicidal Marketing Tactic Backfires
In specific details, the video pictured the Normie character hanging itself. It then transitioned to a burial scene and a subsequent meeting with a God-like figure. The deity, however, tells Normie that it must “refund the community” and relaunch to return to Earth. Following the advice, the mascot jumps from its grave declaring “Death is not a problem.”
As it turned out, the video did not sit well with the crypto community, who thought it distasteful to use suicide as a marketing strategy. The outraged comments ranged from “disgusting” to suggesting that it “encourages suicide.”
Team Issues Apology, Fires Intern Behind Video
Following the huge backlash and in the face of mounting pressure, the Normie team has since put down the video. An apology also followed the action.
According to the team, they never intended to joke about such a sensitive topic. Rather, they had hoped to inspire hope with the disturbing visuals, the team attempted to explain.
In its defense, the team claims to have fired the intern that posted the video. However, many remain unconvinced about the project knowing too well that scapegoating is usually the way around for crypto companies that err massively like Normie.
Notably, the promotional video comes after Normie was exploited in May, leading to a devastating 99% drop in token value within hours. Since the incident, Normie has tried endlessly to get back up on its feet. To rebuild trust it is making serious efforts towards offering refunds to affected investors and relaunching with improved security features.
So far, attempts to revive the project have been showing some positive signs. However, the recent promotional video, which has suddenly backfired, may just have jeopardized these earlier efforts.
NORMIE Reacts
As expected from a meme coin, the price of NORMIE has reflected the online outrage. Although it initially spiked, the coin is currently down 16% over the past 24 hours, trading at $0.033. The future of Normie remains uncertain, but their recent marketing tactic looks to have severely tarnished their reputation.
