Bitcoin and Ether Market Depth Rebounds as Altcoin Liquidity Lags

Bitcoin and ether market depth

Bitcoin and Ether have rebuilt order-book liquidity a year after the October 2025 flash crash, while smaller cryptocurrencies show a weaker recovery.

Research published on October 10 compared market depth across major centralized exchanges at four points since January 2025. The findings highlight an uneven recovery in the capital available to absorb trades.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin and Ether’s near-price market depth increased compared with the crash-day readings.
  • The study’s altcoin basket showed declining dollar-denominated depth.
  • Order-book depth measures available orders; trading volume measures completed transactions.
  • Liquidity can vary between exchanges and change quickly during market stress.

What the Research Found

On October 7, Bitcoin’s depth within 1% of its market price stood at approximately $11.7 million, roughly 75% above the crash-day level. Ether’s depth within the same range reached about $5.3 million, also around 75% higher.

The altcoin basket followed a different pattern. Its depth within 5% of market prices declined by roughly one-third from January 2025 to about $2 million.

The recovery also proved sensitive to daily conditions: Bitcoin’s 1% depth fell approximately 12% between October 7 and 8.

Why Order-Book Depth Matters

An order book lists outstanding buy and sell orders at different prices. Market depth measures how much buying and selling interest sits within a specified distance of the current price.

For someone placing a trade, this helps explain why the displayed market price may differ from the average execution price.

A market order can consume the orders available at the best price and continue through less favourable levels. This creates slippage. More depth near the current price generally gives a trade more available counterparties before it moves further through the book.

However, combined buy-side and sell-side depth does not mean the entire amount is available for a trade in one direction. A seller depends on available bids, while a buyer depends on available offers.

Understanding liquidity therefore requires looking beyond the headline value of a cryptocurrency.

Depth and Trading Volume Answer Different Questions

Trading volume records transactions completed during a period. Depth captures orders available at a particular moment.

A market can record heavy trading while maintaining a thin order book, especially when participants rapidly execute or cancel orders. Conversely, substantial resting orders can exist during a relatively quiet trading session.

The measurement range also matters. Depth within 1% describes conditions close to the current price. A 5% measure includes orders further away, which may only become relevant after a larger price movement.

Comparisons are most useful when they use matching price ranges, currencies and observation times.

Exchange-Level Conditions Still Matter

Liquidity fragmentation means trading interest is spread across separate venues and trading pairs.

An aggregate research figure cannot describe the execution conditions on every exchange. The relevant order book is the one where a transaction will occur, and its available orders can change before execution.

Conclusion

The findings show why liquidity deserves attention alongside price movements. Assessing execution conditions requires checking the relevant trading pair, available orders and measurement window. A stronger historical reading offers useful context, but it does not guarantee the same conditions for the next trade.
